Jeho matka byla čarodějka Eileen Prince-Lloydová,provdaná Snapeová a otec Tobias Snape-mudla,takže Severus je jen poloviční kouzelnické krve.Manžalství jeho rodičů nebylo zjevně štastné,rodiče se neustále hádali,a Severus jen bezmocně přihlížel.
Se svými rodiči vyrůstal ve stejném městečku,kde žila i Lili Evansová (později Potterová).Severus věděl,že je Lily čarodějka,a tak se spolu seznámili.Strávili spolu každou volnou chvíli.Severus vyprávěl Lily o Bradavicích,světě kouzel,protože z rodiny Evansových nikdo nekouzlil a těšili se,až budou mít své vlastní hůlky a pojedou spolu do Bradavic.Petunii se přátelství Severuse a Lily nelíbí,protože ona žádné kouzelné schopnosti nemá.Prosila dopisem dokonce Brumbála,jestli nemůže taky studovat v Bradavicích,ale ten jí vysvětlil,že bez kouzelnických schopností ji nemůže přijmout.Od té doby Petunie nesnáší kouzla,a nasvou sestru nikdy nepřestala žárlit.
Severus měl velký zájem o magii,ještě než nastoupil do Bradavic,a říkalo se o něm,že zná více kleteb než pulka sedmého ročníku.Vynikal také v lektvarech.Upravoval recepty a přísady lektvarů v učebnici,kde si také zapisoval své vymyšlené kletby.
Říkal si Princ dvojí krve(Prince-přijmení matky,dvojí krve-matka čarodějka,otec mudla).V Bradavicích byl zařazený do Zmijozelu,kde si brzy našel kumpány,pozdější smrtijedy,Lily byla zařazena do Nebelvíru.Ale i tak jejich přátelství neskončilo..
Jeho největší nepřátelé byla partička kamarádů z Nebelvíru.James Potter,vynikající chytač,Sirius Black,Jamesův nejlepší a velmi rozpustilý kamarád,Remus Lupin,chytrý a záhadný svou "nemocí" a malý Petr Petigrew,který se vždycky přidal k nějaké jejich roštárně.Nesnášeli se už ode dne,co se setkali ve vlaku do Bradavic.James Severusovi zachránil život,když je sledoval k tunelu do vrby mlátičky.Za to ho Severus nenáviděl,protože James si chtěl spíš zachránit vlastní krk než jeho a původně ho tam nalákal on se Siriusem.
Pozděj ses Lily začli hádat,kvuli Severusovým přátelům,budoucím Smrtijedům,kteří se zaplétali do černé magie,a útočili na studenty z mudlovských rodin.Během hádky přišlo i na Jamese a jeho partu,že oni také neustále něco provádí a toulají se v noci po škole.Lily se jich zastala,že nemají ale nic společného s černou magií,a připomněla,jak mu James zachránil život.Severus v rozhořčení Lily prozradil,že se Jamesovi líbí,ale Lily prohlásila že je to arogantní náfuka.To ho uklidnilo.
Jednoho dne,když Sirius a James šikanovali veřejně Severuse,a Lily se ho pokusila zastat ji nazval v návalu nenávisti a vzteku mudlovskou šmejdkou.Pozděl v noci se jí snažil omluvit,ale Lily omluvu nepřijala.Vadilo jí,že Severus se přátelí s budoucímy smrtijedy,kteří všem studentům z mudlovských rodin nadávají do mudlovských šmejdů,tak proč když ona je z mudlovské rodiny,by měla být odlišná...?Tím se jejich cesty navždy rozešli.
Po škole se Severus se svými přáteli připojil k Voldemortovi,Jednou,v hostinci u Prasečí hlavy v Prasinkách Severus odposlouchával rozhovor Brumbála s nastupující učitelkou jasnovidectví v Bradavicích.Vyslechl si část věštby,která mluví o příchodu toho,kdo dokáže porazit Pána zla,že narodí se na sklonku sedmého měsíce,tomu,kdo se mu již 3krát postavil..zbytek věštby už neslyšel,protože byl načapán hostinským.Se svou zprávou pospíchal k Voldemortovi,který si myslel že se jedná o Lily Evansovou(Poterrovou),Jamese Pottera a jejich syna Harryhoa chystal se je zabít.Když se to Severus dozvěděl,měl sraz s Brumbálem.Vše co prozradil a co měl zrovna Voldemort v plánu s Potterovými sdělil Brumbálovi.varoval ho,a at skryje celou rodinu do bezpečí.Na oplátku slíbil Brumbálovi cokoliv.Od té doby mu byl věrný.
Když byla Lily zavražděná,Severus byl zdrcen,nechtěl dál žít.Brumbál věděl že ji Severus miloval,a tak mu řekl,že přežil její syn.A má její oči.A jestli skutečně Lily miloval,musí chránit jejího syna,aby nezemřela zbytečně.Souhlasil s tím,a chtěl,aby to,že Lily miloval zůstalo jen mezi ním a Brumbálem,jediným člověkem to věděl,a proto mu bezmezně důvěřoval,že přešel na stranu dobra.
Poté začal učit lektvary v Bradavicích,protože místo učitele obrany proti černé magii mu Brumbál nechtěl dát.Byl to Harryho nejneoblíbenější učitel,a Harryho nejméně oblíbený student.To proto,že se tak podobal otci.Ale i přes to,ho celou dobu chránil,jak slíbil Brumbálovi.
V prvním ročníku Harryho chránil před prof.Quirelem,který se ho pokoušel zabít,ve 3.ročníku Harryho zachránil před Lupinem proměněným ve vlkodlaka,v 5.ročníku Harryho učil nitrobranu.Když byl Harry na konci 6.ročníku,zabil na Brumbála,který by stejně zemřel,protože byl zasažen kletbou,kterou mu uzavřel jen do jedné ruky.Jednal tak na Brumbálův příkaz,aby zabránil tomu,že by se stal Draco Malfoy vrahem a aby mu Voldemort nadále důvěřoval.Po Brumbálově smrti a Voldemortovým vzestupu se stal ředitelem Bradavic.Harrymu dal meč Godrika nebelvíra,který potřeboval na zničení viteálů.
Pomocí svého patrona,krásné laně nalákal Harryho k lesnímu jezírku,kde meč ukryl na jeho dno.Během posledního roku svého života,je považován všemi za zrádce a vraha Brumbála,který mu věřil.Ještě před Brumbálovou smrtí byl pověřený tím,že musí Harrymu,až bude čas,říct pravdu.že se musí nechat zabít Voldemortem,protože má v sobě kus jeho duše.Tím byl Severus rozhořčen.
Špehoval jsem pro vás a lhal jsem, vystavoval jsem se pro vás smrtelnému nebezpečí. Všechno jenom proto, aby zůstal syn Lily Potterové v bezpečí. A teď mi říkáte, že ho posíláte jako prase na porážku - “

A tím bylo jeho jméno očištěno,konečně se vědělo,že celou dobu pomáhal v boji proti Voldemortovi,a čím si zasloužil Brumbálovu důvěru.Haryy po něm pojmenoval svého syna-Albuse Severuse Pottera.
